PNG (Portable Network Graphics) appeared in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF. It is lossless, supports an alpha channel for transparency and allows 1 to 16 bits per channel.
Because it is lossless, PNG suits screenshots, icons, logos and interface assets. Photos are usually much larger as PNG than as JPG or WebP.

</div>curl -O https://samplefiles.technologychannel.org/files/png/sample-640x480.pngThe 512 × 512 icon and the transparent landscape both have an alpha channel. The icon also includes a gradient from opaque to fully transparent for testing partial alpha.
PNG is lossless, so it keeps every pixel exactly. JPG discards detail you are unlikely to notice, which makes photos much smaller.
