About the format

What is a MOV file?

MOV is Apple's QuickTime File Format, introduced in 1991. The MP4 standard was based on it, so the two share the same box structure, but MOV can carry codecs MP4 rarely uses, such as Apple ProRes.

iPhones record MOV files by default. Web apps that accept video uploads should expect them and usually convert them to MP4.

FAQ

MOV files: common questions

Will MOV files play in a browser?

Safari plays them. Chrome and Edge usually play MOV files that contain H.264, but not ProRes. For the web, convert MOV to MP4.

What is ProRes?

Apple ProRes is a high-quality codec used in video editing. Files are large and rarely play in browsers, which makes them a useful edge case for upload and transcoding tests.

Can I use these videos in commercial projects?

Yes. Every video here is free for any use, including commercial testing, demos and tutorials. No attribution is required.

Can I download the same video more than once?

Yes, as many times as you like. There is no sign-up, no daily limit and no waiting timer. Direct links also work in scripts, CI jobs and automated tests.
