About the format

What is a DOCX file?

DOCX has been the default Microsoft Word format since Office 2007. It is part of Office Open XML (ECMA-376, ISO/IEC 29500): a ZIP archive holding XML for text, styles and relationships, plus any media files.

Because a DOCX file is a ZIP archive, it starts with the bytes PK. When accepting uploads, check the extension and the internal structure, not just the first bytes.

DOCX files: common questions

Will these files open in Google Docs and LibreOffice?

Yes. They follow the Office Open XML standard, so Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, Pages and libraries such as python-docx can all read them.

What is the difference between DOC and DOCX?

DOC is the older binary Word format used until 2003. DOCX is the XML-based format used since 2007. Most systems today expect DOCX.

Can I download the same document more than once?

Yes, as many times as you like. There is no sign-up, no daily limit and no waiting timer. Direct links also work in scripts, CI jobs and automated tests.
